The road to the Assy Plateau takes you through some of the most scenic landscapes in the Almaty region. Along the way, you will enjoy panoramic views of the Zailiyskiy Alatau mountains before reaching Turgen Gorge - the gateway to Ile-Alatau National Park. At the entrance checkpoint, visitors pay an environmental fee before continuing deeper into the valley.
Turgen Gorge is known for its river views and popular natural attractions, including Bear Waterfall and Kairak Waterfall. Beyond the village of Batan, the paved road ends, and a dirt track leads up to the vast alpine Assy Plateau.
Located at high altitude, the plateau offers excellent conditions for stargazing. It is home to the High Tien Shan Observatory of Kazakhstan, a unique astronomical facility (closed to visitors), which makes an impressive backdrop for photos.
Assy Plateau also serves as a traditional summer pasture (zhailau), where herds of livestock graze freely. The nearby Assy River is well known for seasonal trout fishing, attracting nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts exploring southeastern Kazakhstan.
