Solo

This was one of the most rewarding hikes I did near Almaty. I wanted a real mountain trek rather than just a viewpoint stop, and this route gave exactly that. Starting from the Shymbulak area made the day feel exciting from the beginning, and the scenery kept getting better the higher we went. I really liked the contrast between the open ridgelines, rocky sections, and the final approach to Mametova Glacier Lake. The last part was definitely steeper, but completely worth the effort. When the lake finally came into view, with the glacier and dark rocks around it, it felt like a proper alpine reward. The smart lunch on the trail was also a nice touch because it let us rest without breaking the flow of the hike. A beautiful and very memorable mountain day.

Couple

A fantastic trek for anyone who wants something more adventurous than the usual quick mountain excursions from Almaty. The route felt real and varied, with changing views all the way — first the Shymbulak area, then the higher rocky landscape, and finally the lake itself. Mametova Glacier Lake was absolutely stunning in person, much wilder and more dramatic than I expected. I also appreciated that the day was organized with some flexibility, since weather and cable car timing can obviously affect a hike like this. The guide kept the pace comfortable and the whole experience felt safe and well managed. It was a physically active day, but never in a way that stopped it from being enjoyable. Definitely one of the highlights of our time in Kazakhstan.

Full description

  • This one-day trek is made for travelers who want a real mountain experience near Almaty. Starting from the Shymbulak area, we hike deeper into Ile-Alatau National Park toward the Mametova Glacier Lake — a high-altitude spot named in honor of the WWII hero Manshuk Mametova.\n\nThe route offers classic Tien Shan scenery: open ridgelines, rocky valleys, and sweeping views of surrounding peaks. The hike is moderate overall, with a steeper final section before the lake. Expect roughly 4–6 hours of hiking time depending on pace and trail conditions.\n\nLunch is a “smart lunch” on the trail (there are no restaurants in this area). We also stay flexible with timing, as cable car schedules and weather can affect the plan.
