Architecture and Atmosphere

The Holy Assumption Cathedral in Astana is one of the largest Orthodox churches in Kazakhstan. Its opening took place in 2009, and since then it has become an important center of spiritual life in the capital. The architecture combines traditional Russian style with modern solutions. The white walls and golden domes give the building a solemn and majestic appearance. Inside, the cathedral is adorned with icons, frescoes, and a carved iconostasis. It can accommodate around 4,000 people. This church serves not only as a place of prayer but also as a symbol of spirituality, faith, and cultural heritage. Services, celebrations, and events that unite Orthodox believers and city guests take place here.
History
The second largest religious denomination in Kazakhstan is Orthodox Christianity. In every major city of the country, alongside a large mosque, a significant Orthodox church or cathedral has been built, often of similar height. The Holy Ascension Cathedral serves as a unique center for the Orthodox community of Kazakhstan. The cathedral houses four unique relics: a particle of the relics of Saint Andrew the Apostle, particles of the relics of holy servants of God from the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, an icon with a particle of the relics of Saint Alexander of Svir, the icon of Saint Mary of Egypt, and the icon of the Mother of God of Kazan, gifted by Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and all Rus'. Inside, the church is painted by artists from the Russian village of Palekh, renowned for its icon painters. The Synod of the Orthodox Church of Kazakhstan and the Cyril and Methodius Spiritual and Cultural Center are located on the premises of the Cathedral.
