The "Beit Rachel – Chabad Lubavitch" synagogue is the main Jewish spiritual center of Astana. Built at the initiative of the Chabad Lubavitch community, the synagogue is named after Rachel, the wife of the seventh Lubavitch Rebbe — Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson. The building includes a prayer hall, classrooms, and a cultural center, where religious services, holidays, and educational programs aimed at preserving Jewish traditions and promoting intercultural dialogue take place.
History
The "Beit Rachel – Chabad Lubavitch" synagogue is one of the most significant and beautiful synagogues in Central Asia, located in Astana (Kazakhstan). It was built at the initiative of the Chabad Lubavitch Jewish community and opened in 2004. The name of the synagogue translates to "House of Rachel" and is dedicated to the memory of Rachel Schneerson, the wife of the seventh Lubavitch Rebbe — Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, the spiritual leader of the Chabad movement. Architecturally, the building is designed in a modern style with elements of traditional Jewish architecture. The spacious prayer hall accommodates hundreds of worshippers and features a solemn yet warm atmosphere. The interior decor combines national motifs of Kazakhstan with symbols of the Jewish faith: at the center is the sacred ark (Aron ha-Kodesh) containing the Torah, while stained glass and decorative elements create a sense of light and tranquility. The synagogue serves not only as a place of prayer but also as a cultural and educational center. Regular religious services, holidays (Shabbat, Passover, Hanukkah, Rosh Hashanah, etc.), Torah lectures, Hebrew lessons, youth meetings, and charitable initiatives are held here. The synagogue also hosts a Jewish school, a children's center, and a library.
