Getting There
Most travelers reach Medeo Ice Rink (Medeu) from Almaty or another major regional hub. Private transfers, guided tours, and self-drive routes are the most practical options depending on the season and road conditions.

Medeo is located in the mountain gorge of Maloalmatinka, not far from the center of Almaty. The road offers beautiful views, and the location is well-suited for a short getaway "to the mountains" without long transfers.

The complex is often referred to as the “record factory”: the combination of height, air, and engineering solutions has made this arena special for decades. It is part of the city’s sports history and a recognizable symbol of Almaty.

Even off-season, it's pleasant to walk, take photos, and plan your route further — for example, towards Shymbulak or viewpoints. On a clear day, the gorge looks alpine — and all of this is literally just a few dozen minutes from the city.

Check the current operating hours (they may change due to renovations and the season), bring a warm layer of clothing and comfortable shoes: it’s cooler in the mountains, and the weather changes faster than in the city.

Medeu Ice Rink - Legendary High-Altitude Sports Complex Near Almaty
Construction of the Medeu sports complex began in 1949, and the first official competitions were held in 1951. The artificial ice stadium, covering more than 10,500 square meters, was completed in 1972, turning Medeu into one of the most famous high-altitude skating rinks in the world. It hosted major competitions in speed skating, bandy, figure skating, and other winter sports.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Medeu experienced a period of decline, but a full technical reconstruction was completed in 2003. Today, the Medeu Ice Rink operates year-round and remains one of the top attractions near Almaty, welcoming both professional athletes and visitors seeking mountain recreation in Kazakhstan.
