Founded in 1954, Shymbulak Ski Resort originally served as a training base for Soviet athletes. Over time, it opened to the public and became the leading ski and snowboard destination in Kazakhstan. Located in the Zailiyskiy Alatau mountains, its snowy slopes offer excellent conditions for winter sports near Almaty.
The resort regularly hosts ski and snowboarding competitions, including the annual Alexandra Artemenko Prize. Ahead of the 2011 Winter Asian Games, Shymbulak underwent major reconstruction, expanding its trails, upgrading lift systems, and adding modern infrastructure such as hotels, restaurants, a spa center, boutiques, and a private ski and snowboard school.
In March 2023, Shymbulak entered the Guinness World Records as the highest night ski slope in the world, reaching 3,200 meters above sea level - further strengthening its status as one of the top mountain resorts in Central Asia.
