Medeu Ice Rink - Legendary High-Altitude Sports Complex Near Almaty
Construction of the Medeu sports complex began in 1949, and the first official competitions were held in 1951. The artificial ice stadium, covering more than 10,500 square meters, was completed in 1972, turning Medeu into one of the most famous high-altitude skating rinks in the world. It hosted major competitions in speed skating, bandy, figure skating, and other winter sports.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Medeu experienced a period of decline, but a full technical reconstruction was completed in 2003. Today, the Medeu Ice Rink operates year-round and remains one of the top attractions near Almaty, welcoming both professional athletes and visitors seeking mountain recreation in Kazakhstan.
